Frequently Asked Questions
Whilst many of the other debating clubs focus on either the technical skill of debating or they look for persuasiveness in the participants’ debates through the voting process at the end of it (‘who is the winner of tonight’s debate?’), we pride ourselves as being the 21st “public square” where people are free to express their views on whatever topic is being discussed.
We provide an alternative to the shouty and often abusive “debating” that takes places on social media as we firmly believe that having thoughtful grassroot level discussions about notable and divisive issues is very important for the future of our society. Indeed, our mission is to rebuild the culture of civil debate and respectful disagreement.
No, we are not. Whatever your background, belief system (or a lack thereof!), political persuasion, sexual orientation or any other way by which society tries to divide us, we remain open to everyone who wants to engage in thoughtful debating. To that end, we want to stress that all views are respected. All we ask of our debating community is to join the discussions with an open mind.
Like with any debating club, each Debait session is moderated by a host. That person will ensure that every attendee is given the opportunity to speak freely about a given topic.
It varies but typically anywhere between 5-15 people. We are still young and growing and our members – through the word of mouth – are our best resource for building this community. It is also worth noting that our sessions are capped at 20 attendees which ensures that everyone will get a chance to contribute.
Our sessions are free for first timers and £15 for everyone else. Attendees need to book in advance through our website. First timers can use the code FIRSTDEBAIT when booking to secure their free session.
No. Whilst we of course encourage active participation, there is also much to be gained from care listening and quiet observation. Rest assured, no one is going to pressure you to speak. You remain in charge of that.
Come as you are! There is absolutely nothing to be nervous about. We are a very supportive and thoughtful group of people, united by a shared passion for civil debate and respectful disagreement.
The discussion topics for the next session will be posted on the Debait WhatsApp group as well as on various event marketing sites such as Eventbrite and MeetUp and on our social media channels. Thinking about your personal views on these topics will be the best way to prepare. Please email us at info@debait.co.uk with your contact number if you would like to be added on the Debait WhatsApp group.
Our sessions are held on the last Saturday of each month between 5pm-7pm at 259 Goswell Road, London EC1V 7AH (Angel is the nearest Tube station).
Yes. Advance booking is mandatory. The reason for this is to both gauge (min. of five required for the sessions to go ahead) and control (max. 20 per session) attendee numbers. Please follow the booking process available on our website.
